Mental Zooming as Variable Asset Integration in Inter-Temporal Choice

چکیده
Our time preferences deviate systematically from that of Homo economicus. They seem to be driven by a form mental zooming, where higher and more distant amounts induce holistic perspective in contrast smaller near future amounts. We model zooming as variable asset integration ask whether this can explain the observed variation discount rates experiments. It can. Equally important, for both magnitude is similar across two countries (Ethiopia Malawi) within country (Ethiopia).

Temporal Zooming
Spatio-temporal knowledge representation often requires changing from one level of detail or granularity to another so users can carry out a desired task. Meteorological occurrences, geological processes, or population movements, for example, can be examined at different granularities. This includes different spatial perspectives as well as temporal views where phenomena may be examined under r...
متن کاملTemporal Discounting and Inter-Temporal Choice in Rhesus Monkeys
Humans and animals are more likely to take an action leading to an immediate reward than actions with delayed rewards of similar magnitudes. Although such devaluation of delayed rewards has been almost universally described by hyperbolic discount functions, the rate of this temporal discounting varies substantially among different animal species. This might be in part due to the differences in ...

Interpreting Time Horizon Effects in Inter-Temporal Choice We compare different designs that have been used to test for an impact of time horizon on discounting, using real incentives and two representative data sets. With the most commonly used type of design we replicate the typical finding of declining (hyperbolic) discounting, but with other designs find constant or increasing discounting. ...
متن کاملAging impairs deliberation and behavioral flexibility in inter-temporal choice
Inter-temporal choice depends on multiple, interacting systems, some of which may be compromised with age. Some of these systems may be responsible for ongoing trial-by-trial choice strategies. Some may represent the consequences of action. Some may be necessary for the coupling between anticipated consequences and strategies currently in use, flexibly guiding behavior. When faced with a diffic...
متن کاملShifts in Detail through Temporal Zooming
Spatio-temporal knowledge representation often requires shifting from one level of detail to another so that users can carry out a desired task. Geographic information systems typically treat such alterations in detail with respect to the geometric properties of objects. In this paper, we extend the theories based on geometrical considerations only to an approach that focuses on shifts between ...
